Kolkata, March 13: In the Kanthi parliamentary constituency, which comprises seven assembly seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holds four seats while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) occupies three. With the BJP also controlling the Kanthi parliamentary seat, the upcoming 2026 assembly elections promise to be a competitive affair.
The Kanthi constituency, previously known as Contai, is one of India’s parliamentary electoral regions. It includes seven assembly seats located in the East Midnapore district, predominantly inhabited by Hindus.
In 2009, Sisir Kumar Adhikari won the seat for the TMC. The party maintained its dominance in the 2014 and 2019 elections. However, in 2024, Soumendu Adhikari secured victory for the BJP.
The seven assembly seats in the Kanthi constituency are named: (211) Chandipur, (212) Patashpur, (213) Kanthi Uttar, (214) Bhagwanpur, (215) Khejuri, (216) Kanthi Dakshin, and (217) Ramnagar.
Among these, Soham Chakraborty from Chandipur, Uttam Barik from Patashpur, and Akhil Giri from Ramnagar won on TMC tickets, while Sumita Sinha from Kanthi Uttar, Ravindranath Maity from Bhagwanpur, Shantanu Pramanik from Khejuri, and Arup Kumar Das from Kanthi Dakshin won on BJP tickets.
Out of the seven assembly seats, the BJP has claimed four, while the TMC holds three. Notably, TMC has consistently won the Chandipur, Patashpur, and Ramnagar seats since 2011.
In 2016, TMC held the Kanthi Uttar seat, but the BJP claimed it in 2021. Similarly, the Bhagwanpur and Khejuri seats were won by TMC in 2011 and 2016, but the BJP took them in the 2021 assembly elections.
The Kanthi Dakshin assembly seat has been significant, with current BJP leader and opposition leader in the assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, previously winning on a TMC ticket. He had been victorious since 2006, but the BJP won this seat in the 2021 assembly elections.
East Midnapore, one of West Bengal’s 23 administrative districts, has its headquarters in Tamluk. This district was formed on January 1, 2002, by separating from the then Medinipur district. Tamluk also had an ancient port. The region is bordered by the Bay of Bengal to the south, the Rupnarayan River to the east, and the Subarnarekha River to the west. The confluence of the Rupnarayan River with the Dwarkeshwar and Shilai rivers has created a rich and accessible waterway system, fostering trade, culture, and early interactions with outsiders.
