Patna, April 8: The Bihar government has initiated measures to combat the circulation of counterfeit currency. Chief Secretary Pratyay Amrit has directed that ‘note sorting machines’ be installed in bank branches near the India-Nepal border to effectively curb the flow of fake notes.
The Chief Secretary also emphasized the need to enhance surveillance in border areas. He instructed the establishment of more ‘currency exchange’ centers for public convenience. During the 40th State Level Coordination Committee meeting, he highlighted the importance of conducting regular review meetings to improve transparency and operations in cooperative banks.
The meeting reviewed the implementation of the ‘Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes’ Act 2019 and the ‘Bihar Protection of Interests of Depositors’ Act 2002. The Economic Offenses Unit was directed to take swift action against guilty entities.
Sujit Kumar Arvind, the Regional Director of the Reserve Bank of India, informed that banks will now initiate real calls from numbers starting with ‘1600’. He clarified that the official website links of banks must end with ‘IN’ to help the public distinguish between genuine and fake websites.
He also mentioned that the Finance Department and RBI are running continuous awareness campaigns against fraud through social media, radio jingles in Maithili and Bhojpuri, and newspapers.
The RBI introduced the ‘Digital Payments Intelligence Platform,’ which uses artificial intelligence to detect fraud in real-time and identify suspicious entities. Senior officials from various departments, including Additional Chief Secretary Anand Kishore and Special Secretary Mukesh Kumar Lal, were present at the meeting.
