Los Angeles, March 7: Hollywood actor Ben Stiller has taken to social media to criticize the White House for using a clip from his film “Tropic Thunder” on its official accounts.
Stiller, 60, expressed his concerns on the platform X after the White House shared a video that combined clips from various films and TV shows, including “Top Gun,” “Superman,” “Transformers,” “Breaking Bad,” “Iron Man,” and his 2008 comedy “Tropic Thunder.” According to a report by People magazine, these clips were juxtaposed with scenes related to U.S. military operations.
The White House captioned the post, “Justice the American Way.” In response, Stiller wrote, “Hey White House, please remove the clip from ‘Tropic Thunder.’ We did not give you permission, and we have no interest in being part of your propaganda machine. War is not a movie.”
As reported by People, Stiller is among several artists who have objected to the White House’s use of their content. Other notable names include Celine Dion, Bruce Springsteen, Linkin Park, Neil Young, Olivia, and Radiohead.
This week, singer Kesha also voiced her disapproval after the White House used her song “Blow” in a video featuring a fighter jet launching missiles from a naval ship. On March 2, Kesha stated in an Instagram story, “I learned that the White House used one of my songs on TikTok to incite violence and threaten war. Taking war lightly is disgusting and inhumane.” She firmly opposes any use of her music to promote violence.
In response to Kesha’s statement, White House Communications Director Steven reposted her comments on X, stating, “These ‘singers’ keep falling into this trap. It gives us more attention and views, as people want to see what they are complaining about. Thanks for bringing attention to this matter.”
Previously, the Trump administration faced backlash for sharing a video in December that showcased recent arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
