Bangladeshi national killed in fire at a guest house in Kolkata

Kolkata, Mar 12 : A Bangladeshi national was killed and two others were injured in a fire at a multi-storied guest house on Free School Street in central part of the city, where at least 11 rooms were gutted, police and fire brigade sources said on Saturday. The deceased ,an aged woman Shamimatul Afroj, is a resident of Chapai in Nawabganj in Bangladesh. Initial report said Afroz died due to asphyxiation. The other two injured have been admitted to a private hospital. The four-storied guest house where about 28 Bangladeshi nationals were staying when the blaze was reported around 04,00 hours. Most of the occupants, who had come to the city for treatment at different hospitals, getting out themselves or being rescued, said the officials. At least three fire fighting vehicles were pressed into the services to douse the flames within an hour. The rooms of the second and third floors were damaged badly. Fire brigade sources primarily suspected that the fire could spark from the short-circuit in the wirings. Deputy Commissioner Rupesh Kumar visited the spot for an inquiry.
