New Delhi, April 21: Renowned author Madhu Kishwar is facing increasing challenges as the Chandigarh police have reached out to their Delhi counterparts regarding allegations of sharing objectionable and misleading videos on social media.
On April 19, Chandigarh police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against her under multiple sections of the law and visited her residence in Delhi on Tuesday to serve a notice.
Leading the police team, Sarita Roy, the officer in charge of Sector 19 in Chandigarh, informed the media that the FIR was registered at the Sector 26 police station.
Providing a brief overview of the case, SHO Roy stated that it pertains to an objectionable video that Kishwar shared and reposted. A notice has been issued to her under Section 35.3 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
She also mentioned that the author has been summoned to appear at the Chandigarh police station on Wednesday to assist with the investigation.
Kishwar is facing charges under several sections of the IPC, including Section 196 (promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will between groups based on religion, race, or language), Section 336(1) (forgery), and Section 356 (criminal defamation), along with Sections 66C and 66D, and Section 67.
The FIR was filed based on a complaint from a Chandigarh resident who claimed that misleading and fake social media posts and videos were being shared by various accounts, including his own. The complainant alleges that these posts were made with malicious intent.
Kishwar has acknowledged the FIR against her on social media and confirmed that a police team visited her home.
She stated that the police arrived late at night and assured them of her cooperation. In a post on the social media platform X, she noted that, according to the law, police are not permitted to meet or arrest women at night or before dawn. Therefore, she spoke with the leader of the delegation over the phone, who informed her that the team was there to serve a notice regarding the FIR filed against her in Chandigarh. She urged them to comply with the law and come in the morning, emphasizing that both parties maintained proper decorum.
