Attack on US Embassy in Baghdad Sparks Fire After Drone Strikes

Baghdad, March 17: A significant attack occurred on the US Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, on Tuesday, resulting in a fire within the compound. The assault took place when two explosive-laden drones crashed into the embassy grounds, igniting a blaze.

This incident happened in the highly secure Green Zone, where the US Embassy is located. According to a source from Iraq’s Ministry of Interior, both drones exploded upon hitting the embassy’s security perimeter, causing flames and smoke visible from outside.

Immediately after the attack, sirens blared throughout the compound. However, the embassy’s security system failed to intercept the drones. Reports indicate that the defense system could not engage the incoming threats.

As of now, there are no immediate reports of casualties. However, there are concerns about potential damage to the embassy buildings and other facilities due to the fire.

Sources revealed that multiple attacks targeted the embassy from Monday evening into early Tuesday. Video footage showed one drone detonating very close to the embassy compound, suggesting that security measures were breached several times in one night.

The Green Zone in Baghdad is considered highly secure, housing Iraqi government buildings, the parliament, and several foreign embassies, including the US Embassy. Nevertheless, this area has been targeted by rocket and mortar attacks multiple times in recent years.

In a related note, Iraq’s Oil Ministry reported that two drones also targeted the Majnoon oil field in southern Iraq late Monday night. According to spokesperson Sahib Bazoun, one drone collided with a telecom tower but caused no damage. The second drone was aimed at offices of a US company operating in the area.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) claimed that six of its members were killed and four others injured in an Israeli attack in the western province of Anbar. The organization stated that this attack occurred at a checkpoint in the city of Al-Qaim, near the Syrian border.

The PMF emphasized that this location was an “official security post,” and its members were performing their duty to protect the country’s land and sovereignty at the time of the attack.
