Thane, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : In a shocking incident in Thane, Maharashtra, Pradeep Purnekar, the divisional chief of the Shiv Sena (UBT), was shot by unidentified assailants. The attack occurred in the Manorama Nagar area near R Mall, under the jurisdiction of the Kapoorwadi police station. Purnekar sustained two gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
According to reports, two masked attackers opened fire on Purnekar before fleeing the scene. The incident created panic in the area, prompting police to launch an investigation. Authorities are reviewing footage from nearby CCTV cameras to identify the perpetrators.
Purnekar is known to be close to former MP Rajan Vichare and has a political background, with his brother, Jaynath Purnekar, having served as a former municipal councilor in Thane. The attack reportedly took place near Purnekar’s office in Ganesh Nagar, although police are still clarifying the exact circumstances and location of the shooting.
As of now, the motive behind the attack remains unclear, and police are exploring various angles in their investigation. This incident follows a recent homicide of a police sub-inspector in Thane, raising concerns about the safety of political figures in the city. In the recent Thane Municipal Corporation elections, Purnekar’s wife, Vijeta Purnekar, and his brother ran as candidates for Shiv Sena (UBT) in Ward No. 3 but faced electoral defeat.
