Guwahati, August 18: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the state government is expanding its ‘Co-District Model’ to bring administration closer to the people and make governance more accessible.
Sarma revealed that eight additional co-districts will be created across the state, increasing the total number of operational co-districts to 47.
In a post on the social media platform X, he stated, “Good governance begins when the government comes closer to the people. Our Co-District Model is doing just that. It is bringing administration within easy reach of the public. Currently, 39 co-districts are operational, and we are adding eight more to enhance ‘Ease of Governance’ in Assam.”
The Co-District initiative aims to decentralize administrative functions and reduce the need for residents in remote areas to travel long distances to access government services at district headquarters. The Assam government initiated the co-district administrative system to strengthen grassroots governance and improve the delivery of public services.
Under this model, selected administrative and governmental functions are brought closer to citizens through co-district offices, allowing residents to access services and interact with administration near their homes.
This initiative is particularly significant for Assam, where challenging geography, long distances, and connectivity issues can make it difficult for people in rural and remote areas to access district-level administrative services. The state government has consistently emphasized administrative reforms and decentralization as key components of its governance agenda, aiming to make public services faster and more accessible.
The expansion of the Co-District network is also expected to strengthen coordination among various government departments at the local level, facilitating the rapid implementation of welfare and development programs.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly stressed the importance of making governance more citizen-centric and reducing administrative barriers for those seeking government services. This expansion aligns with the government’s broader efforts to improve digital governance, administrative decentralization, and last-mile delivery of government schemes.
Sarma noted that the additional co-districts will further bolster the government’s efforts towards ‘Ease of Governance’ across Assam. This move is anticipated to benefit residents by bringing administrative systems closer to local communities and reducing reliance on district headquarters for everyday government needs.
The government is expected to announce the locations and administrative jurisdictions of the eight new co-districts as part of the expansion process.
