Guwahati, August 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the importance of skill-based education for students on Thursday. He urged them not to rely solely on traditional degrees in today’s competitive job market. According to Sarma, merit and expertise will define opportunities in the future.
While inaugurating the application form distribution program for the Chief Minister’s Nijut Moina and Nijut Babu schemes at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, he advised students to pursue additional skills alongside their regular studies and discipline. He stated, “Today’s world values experts. A graduation or post-graduation degree is no longer sufficient. To enhance job prospects, students must develop proficiency in a specific area.”
Discussing employment opportunities, the Chief Minister announced that the state government plans to recruit around 200,000 individuals over the next five years. This recruitment will include approximately 22,000 lab technicians, GNM nurses, and ANMs. He expressed concern regarding the lack of interest among students in studying science, highlighting the need to foster interest in this field for the long-term development of Assam.
Sarma reiterated his government’s commitment to transparent recruitment processes. To date, 160,000 government jobs have been filled purely based on merit, and future recruitments will also be free from corruption.
He remarked that the undergraduate and postgraduate phases of student life are crucial. Success comes not from protests but from dedication to education. Students should focus on their studies, seek knowledge, and contribute to societal change through education.
The Chief Minister also launched the application process for the Nijut Moina and Nijut Babu schemes, aimed at promoting serious study and enhancing students’ academic commitment. The Nijut Moina scheme, initiated to prevent child marriage, is expected to benefit five lakh girls this financial year. Meanwhile, the expansion of the Nijut Babu scheme will benefit 120,000 students.
During the event, Sarma provided financial assistance of ₹15.86 crore through DBT for 793 flood-affected schools in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat districts. Additionally, over ₹4.26 crore was allocated from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to assist 21,025 students in Sivasagar and Charaideo with purchasing study materials damaged in the floods.
He assured that schools suffering permanent damage would receive additional support after a thorough assessment. The government is committed to restoring the educational infrastructure without disrupting students’ studies.
