Dispur, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid tribute to forest workers who lost their lives in the line of duty during a ceremony marking National Forest Martyrs Day on September 11. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to strengthening forest security and protecting wildlife and natural heritage.
In a post on social media platform X, Sarma expressed his respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice to safeguard the state’s forests, wildlife, and natural resources. He highlighted the risks involved in protecting Assam’s forests and pledged to honor the courage of forest martyrs by ensuring the preservation of these vital ecosystems for future generations.
Sarma also emphasized the importance of empowering women through the state’s “Van Durga” initiative, which aims to enhance the role of women in frontline forest protection efforts. This program involves women patrolling sensitive areas, assisting in monitoring, reporting forest crimes, and contributing to wildlife conservation efforts.
Photos shared by the Chief Minister showcased Van Durga personnel actively engaged in field duties, demonstrating their readiness for patrolling and security operations.
Assam boasts a vast network of protected areas, including national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, tiger reserves, and elephant reserves. According to the state forest department, Assam is home to five national parks, 20 wildlife sanctuaries, three tiger reserves, and five elephant reserves. The department’s extensive conservation efforts focus on the protection and management of forests and wildlife habitats, reforestation, restoration of degraded forests, tree planting activities, and community involvement.
National Forest Martyrs Day is observed annually on September 11 in memory of those forest workers who have lost their lives while protecting forests and wildlife.
