Assam Aims for Dairy Sector Boost with 1 Million Liters Daily Production Target
Assams government targets daily milk production of 1 million liters to strengthen the dairy sector and improve farmers livelihoods.

Guwahati, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the state government is taking significant steps to enhance the dairy sector. The ambitious goal is to produce 1 million liters of milk daily. Alongside this, dairy farmers will receive direct subsidies, and the processing infrastructure will be expanded.
In a post on the social media platform X, Sarma stated, “A robust dairy sector will improve nutrition, secure farmers’ livelihoods, and strengthen the rural economy.” He highlighted these initiatives as part of the state’s efforts to create an “Atmanirbhar Assam” (self-reliant Assam).
Sarma pointed out that per capita milk availability in Assam is below the national average, necessitating an increase in production and improvements in the dairy supply chain. The government is committed to promoting dairy activities and directly subsidizing milk to assist farmers in increasing their income.
Plans are underway to establish large dairy processing plants across Assam. These facilities will enhance milk processing capacity, improve handling, and promote an organized dairy sector.
The Chief Minister also mentioned the inauguration of a milk processing plant in Sonitpur district, which has a capacity of 20,000 liters per day. This facility will bolster the state’s processing infrastructure and help increase the availability of processed milk.
This announcement comes at a time when Assam is striving to bridge the gap between local milk demand and production while creating better market opportunities for dairy farmers. Strengthening the milk collection, processing, and distribution network will be crucial to achieving the production target.
The government’s focus on subsidies and processing facilities aims to enhance participation in dairy farming and improve the sector’s service capacity to consumers. Continuous expansion in milk production could generate rural employment and provide an additional income source for farming families.
Sarma emphasized that these initiatives will lay the foundation for “Atmanirbhar Assam,” leading to better nutrition, strengthened farmer livelihoods, and a more empowered rural economy.
