Itanagar, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : Governor K.T. Parnaik and Chief Minister Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh convened on Tuesday to discuss the state’s primary development priorities. Their conversation emphasized strategic infrastructure projects, inclusive development, and initiatives aimed at safeguarding the long-term interests of the public.
During a meeting at the Lok Bhawan, Chief Minister Khandu briefed the Governor on various developmental issues and ongoing major initiatives, including the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP). This project is deemed crucial for water security, energy production, flood control, and regional development, holding national significance.
Khandu informed Governor Parnaik about the extensive outreach efforts undertaken by the state government to raise awareness regarding the project’s pre-feasibility report (PFR) and to gauge public feedback.
According to Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, the SUMP, valued at ₹1.5 lakh crore, is a mega hydropower project with a proposed capacity of 11,200 megawatts. This initiative is expected to significantly alter the development landscape of the Siang district, named after the mighty Brahmaputra River, known locally as the Siang River in Arunachal Pradesh.
The Governor commended the Chief Minister and his cabinet for their efforts to engage directly with local communities and stakeholders in the Siang region. He noted that such initiatives are vital for building public trust, addressing concerns transparently, and ensuring that citizens remain informed participants in the development process, while also advancing the state’s and nation’s developmental needs.
Furthermore, the Governor stated that meaningful dialogue with citizens strengthens the democratic decision-making process and fosters a shared understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with major infrastructure projects.
He expressed confidence that ongoing consultations and public participation would yield informed and constructive outcomes.
Additionally, the Governor praised the state government’s achievements under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) during the World Habitat Day 2026 celebrations, where the state received two awards for outstanding performance. These accolades reflect the state’s commitment to improving the living standards of urban residents and ensuring that the benefits of development reach every eligible citizen.
