Amaravati, August 11: The monsoon session of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly is set to begin on August 17. Governor Justice S. Abdul Nazeer has issued a notification calling for the session of both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council.
According to an official statement released on Monday, the Assembly proceedings will commence at 9 AM on August 17, while the Legislative Council session will start at 10 AM on the same day.
The opposition party, YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), may boycott the Assembly session as they seek the designation of ‘Leader of the Opposition’ for their leader and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
The YSRCP lost power to the TDP-led NDA in the 2024 elections and currently holds only 11 seats in the 175-member Assembly. However, they do have a majority in the Legislative Council. The party plans to participate in the upper house proceedings to challenge the NDA government on various issues. Jagan Mohan Reddy has stated that attending the Assembly session holds no significance unless they are granted the ‘Leader of the Opposition’ status.
He reiterated that the party needs adequate time to raise public issues, which can only be achieved if they are recognized as the main opposition party. He emphasized that the opposition should voice the concerns of the people, stating that a lack of respect for democracy reflects a misunderstanding on their part. The matter of granting ‘Leader of the Opposition’ status is currently pending in the High Court. Jagan Mohan Reddy filed a petition in July 2024, requesting the state government to designate him as the ‘Leader of the Opposition.’
Meanwhile, YSRCP MLC Parvathareddy Chandrashekar Reddy mentioned that the party will raise issues regarding alleged irregularities in the Legislative Council.
The YSRCP is conducting protests across the state, demanding an immediate CBI inquiry into the ‘Mega DSC-2025 Scam’ and the resignation of Education Minister Nara Lokesh to ensure a transparent and independent investigation.
The MLC clarified that the YSRCP is neither demanding the cancellation of the DSC (District Selection Committee) exam nor the removal of previously appointed candidates; they are simply seeking a thorough investigation into the irregularities and justice for deserving candidates.
