Amit Shahs Punjab Visit Sparks Political Controversy
Amit Shahs Punjab visit faces criticism from Congress and AAP, raising concerns over drug issues and government accountability.

New Delhi, October 20 (Daily Kiran) : Central Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent visit to Punjab has ignited a political firestorm. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claims this trip marks the beginning of the end for the state’s gang-related issues and fear. In contrast, both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress have raised significant questions about the visit.
During a conversation in Faridkot, Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan welcomed Shah’s presence, acknowledging his role as the country’s home minister. However, he emphasized the need for Shah to fulfill his responsibilities effectively. He pointed out that large drug seizures are occurring in Gujarat, Shah’s home state, which are endangering the youth of Punjab.
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari also criticized Shah’s visit while speaking in Prayagraj. He noted that while protests against drug abuse and the burning of effigies of Ravana are commendable, the central government must also recognize its responsibilities. Tiwari stated, “You are protesting against the adverse effects of drugs in Punjab, but you must also consider that these substances are crossing international borders from Pakistan and Afghanistan, brought in by those who wish to spread them. The Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) are securing our borders, making you partially responsible as well.”
He further remarked, “While the Punjab government is accountable, you have an even greater responsibility. Before demanding resignations from them and criticizing their actions, you should reflect on your own position and question your effectiveness.”
Congress spokesperson Udit Raj also took aim at Shah, questioning why he is not managing his department effectively. He highlighted that criminals imprisoned in Sabarmati Jail are allegedly running international-level gangs. Tiwari pointed out that crime rates in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are alarming, with merchants facing extortion and threats. Many are fleeing in fear, knowing that reaching out to the government is futile. He mentioned that even Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff has been targeted with threats, questioning Shah’s competence in handling his responsibilities while offering advice to others.
Tensions surrounding Shah’s visit continue to rise, with opposition parties demanding accountability from the central government regarding the ongoing drug crisis in Punjab.
