Punjab Government to Hand Over Investigation of Jota Murder Case to CBI
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announces CBI investigation into the murder of anti-drug activist Parminder Singh Jota.

Chandigarh, October 20 (Daily Kiran) : The Punjab government has decided to transfer the investigation of the murder of anti-drug activist Parminder Singh Jota to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This announcement came on October 20, ahead of a visit by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the state.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed solidarity with Jota’s family, who have been vocal in their fight against drug abuse. In a post on X, Mann stated, “We stand firmly with the father and family of Parminder Singh Jota, who fought against drugs. In respect of their demand, we are handing over this case to the CBI.”
Mann reiterated the government’s commitment to combatting drug trafficking in Punjab. He emphasized that the fight against drug smugglers would continue with unwavering determination. “Our battle against drug traffickers is resolute. We will not hesitate to take any necessary strict measures to make Punjab drug-free,” he added.
As concerns over drug trafficking and associated violence grow, Shah’s visit comes in the wake of Jota’s murder, which has intensified the discussion around safety for those opposing drug trade. During his visit, Shah is expected to meet the families of three individuals whose deaths have highlighted the drug problem in the state.
Shah’s visit is particularly significant as the issue of drugs has become a major political topic ahead of the 2027 assembly elections in Punjab. The Union Home Ministry has requested detailed reports from the Punjab government regarding three cases linked to this controversy.
In Mansa, where Jota was shot dead on October 13, protests have erupted demanding justice. This incident has sparked a public debate about the safety of activists who speak out against drug trafficking. Jota’s father, Bhim Singh, has welcomed Shah’s visit and invited him to meet at their home rather than at the protest site.
