Airtel Invests $1 Billion to Expand Nxtras AI Data Center Capacity to 1 GW

Mumbai, April 1: Bharti Airtel is significantly enhancing its footprint in India’s rapidly growing data center sector, announcing a substantial $1 billion investment in its subsidiary, Nxtra. This strategic move comes in response to the increasing demand for AI-ready infrastructure among enterprises, cloud providers, and government initiatives.

The funding round, supported by Alpha Wave Global, Carlyle, and Anchorage Capital, values Nxtra at approximately $3.1 billion. Bharti Airtel will also contribute to this investment, maintaining a controlling stake in the company, pending regulatory approvals.

A Clear Push into AI Infrastructure

This latest investment underscores how telecom operators are moving beyond traditional connectivity to focus on digital infrastructure linked to AI and cloud advancements. As businesses increasingly adopt data-intensive applications, the need for reliable and scalable data centers is becoming essential.

Nxtra, which already has a robust market presence, is gearing up for its next phase of growth. Currently operating at around 300 MW capacity, the company aims to reach 1 GW in the coming years, which is expected to solidify its status among India’s top data center providers.

Strong Backing from Global Investors

This investment reflects the growing confidence in India’s digital infrastructure potential. Alpha Wave Global will invest $435 million, Carlyle will contribute $240 million, and Anchorage Capital will add $35 million, with Airtel providing the remaining funds.

India’s data center market is experiencing steady growth, driven by increased cloud adoption, enterprise digitization, and rising demand from hyperscalers. Industry estimates suggest that the sector could continue to expand rapidly, with capacity addition becoming a focal point.

Expansion Plans Already Underway

Nxtra currently operates 14 large data centers and over 120 edge facilities across India. Its services include co-location, managed hosting, cloud infrastructure, data backup, and disaster recovery.

The company is also integrating AI into its operations, particularly in predictive maintenance, energy efficiency, and automation. With new capital, Nxtra is expected to accelerate its expansion plans, including the development of AI-ready campuses in Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata.

Additionally, Nxtra is collaborating with Google on a large-scale AI data center campus, indicating the demand the company is preparing to meet in the future.
