Ahmedabad, February 9: South African captain Aiden Markram delivered a stellar performance on Monday, scoring a half-century against Canada in the ninth match of the T20 World Cup 2026. This achievement places Markram jointly at ‘number 2’ among South African players for the most half-centuries in T20 World Cup history.
Leading the list is AB de Villiers, who has five half-centuries, while both Markram and Quinton de Kock have four each, sharing the second position.
In this match, Markram partnered with de Kock to amass 66 runs in just six overs, marking South Africa’s second-highest score during the powerplay in T20 World Cup history. Previously, South Africa had scored 66 runs for the loss of one wicket against Afghanistan in the 2016 T20 World Cup.
The highest powerplay score for South Africa in T20 World Cup history remains 83 runs, achieved against England in 2016.
Batting first after losing the toss, the South African team posted a total of 213 runs while losing four wickets. Markram and de Kock formed a crucial partnership, adding 70 runs in 6.5 overs. De Kock scored 25 runs off 22 balls, hitting two fours before being dismissed. Following his exit, Ryan Rickelton joined Markram, contributing to a 56-run partnership for the second wicket off 28 balls. Markram finished with a score of 59 runs, while Rickelton added 33 runs to the total.
At one point, South Africa had lost four wickets for just 138 runs. However, Tristan Stubbs and David Miller then combined to score 75 runs in 37 balls, pushing the team past the 200-run mark. Miller remained unbeaten with 39 runs off 23 balls, including three sixes and one four, while Stubbs scored 34 runs off just 19 balls, hitting four boundaries.
From the opposing team, Ansh Patel was the standout bowler, taking three wickets, while captain Dilpreet Bajwa managed to claim one wicket.
