The heritage site situated on Japan’s southern island of Okinawa on Thursday was engulfed by fire in the early hours of the morning.
The incident came to light after residents living near the site posted the video on social media.
A popular tourist attraction, Shuri was built more than 500 years ago as the royal castle of the Ryukyu Kingdom and it had been scheduled to be included as a stop on the 2020 Tokyo Olympic torch relay route.
