Colombo, : The 36-hour curfew in Sri Lanka, which was imposed amid anti-government protests, was lifted on Monday. A state of emergency was imposed on Saturday as violence at mass protests against economic mismanagement in the capital of Colombo continued to grow. The people were restricted from gathering in any public place during the 36-hour curfew. However, the people defied the curfew and took to streets to protest against the government. The curfew has been lifted but the state of emergency is still in effect in the island. An Extraordinary Gazette Notification was issued on April 1 imposing a state of emergency throughout the country by the Secretary to the President on the orders of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. According to Public Utilities Commission, the maximum power cut in the country on Monday will be limited to five hours. VP RNJ
