Bokaro, April 12: In a shocking development, 28 police officers from the Pindrajora police station in Bokaro, Jharkhand, have been suspended following the revelation of the murder of 18-year-old student Pushpa Kumari Mahto, who had been missing for eight months. The suspension was ordered by the Superintendent of Police (SP) due to serious allegations of negligence and misconduct in the investigation of Pushpa’s abduction and murder.
Among those suspended are 10 sub-inspectors, 5 assistant sub-inspectors, 2 head constables, and 11 constables. The action comes after Rekha Devi, a resident of the Pindrajora area, filed a complaint in August 2025 regarding her daughter’s kidnapping. When the police failed to take any action for months, Rekha approached the Jharkhand High Court with a habeas corpus petition.
During the hearing, the High Court deemed the case extremely serious and summoned the SP and the state’s Director General of Police (DGP). The court reprimanded the SP for the negligence displayed in handling the case. Following this, Bokaro SP Harvinder Singh formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the leadership of the city DSP to expedite the investigation.
Within just two days of the SIT’s formation, the case took a dramatic turn. Based on technical evidence, call details, and other facts, police discovered that the victim had been in contact with a man named Dinesh Kumar Mahto. Upon detaining Dinesh and conducting a rigorous interrogation, he confessed that Pushpa had been pressuring him to marry her. Frustrated, he lured her to a secluded area on July 21, 2025, where he fatally stabbed her and concealed her body in the bushes.
On Saturday, police recovered the victim’s skeletal remains from the forest, along with the murder weapon, clothing worn during the incident, four mobile phones, and other evidence. The police have decided to conduct a DNA test on the remains. The SIT’s investigation revealed alarming findings, indicating that local police not only neglected their duties but also attempted to shield the accused.
Sources suggest that during the investigation, there were indications of monetary transactions between some police officers and the accused, which led to the mass suspension of 28 officers.
