Shimla, February 22: India is known as a sacred land of temples, with millions dedicated to various deities across the country. Among these is the Yulla Kanda Temple, located in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, dedicated to Lord Krishna.
Yulla Kanda is recognized as the highest Krishna temple in the world, nestled amidst a sacred lake and surrounded by nature. The temple’s altitude is estimated to be between 12,000 and 14,000 feet. According to ancient beliefs, this temple was constructed during the Mahabharata era by the Pandavas during their exile.
The temple is famous for its natural beauty and the trek leading to it, which passes through snow-capped peaks, lush forests, and serene landscapes. Devotees must trek 12 kilometers from the village of Yulla to reach the Yulla Kanda Krishna Temple. Due to its mountainous location, the best time to visit is considered to be from May to September when the weather is pleasant.
The festival of Janmashtami is celebrated with great fervor at Yulla Kanda Temple. On this special day, Lord Krishna’s birthday is observed in traditional ways, accompanied by a fair that attracts pilgrims from far and wide.
A local tradition adds to the temple’s uniqueness. It is believed that floating a hat in the temple’s lake reveals the fate of the devotees. Visitors throw a Kinnauri hat into the lake, and if it floats to the other side without sinking, their wishes are said to be fulfilled. Conversely, if the hat sinks, it indicates that the devotee may face challenges ahead.
Additionally, there is a belief that devotees who circumambulate the lake with true faith and devotion have all their sins washed away and receive the blessings of the Lord.
