New Delhi, April 4: The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) lodged a complaint with Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan on Friday, expressing dissatisfaction over the limited speaking time allocated during the debate on the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
A delegation of YSRCP MPs, led by parliamentary party leader Y.V. Subba Reddy, met with Radhakrishnan in New Delhi to present their grievances. They highlighted that despite having seven MPs, the party was given only five minutes to speak, and their microphone was cut off prematurely. In contrast, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and other smaller parties received more time to express their views.
Subba Reddy urged the Rajya Sabha Chairman to place the text of his speech on the table. The party also called for an investigation into the deviation from parliamentary convention and established procedures.
YSRCP criticized the limited time allotted for discussion on the bill, noting that TDP, which has only two members in the house, was granted over 15 minutes to speak. Meanwhile, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), with four members, was also limited to just five minutes.
The representation stated that this unequal treatment is particularly troubling, as the bill directly impacts the constitutional future of Andhra Pradesh and the interests of the constituents represented by all seven YSRCP Rajya Sabha members. Denying the main opposition party in Andhra Pradesh a fair opportunity to voice its opinions on such a significant federal and regional matter is akin to silencing the people of the state.
Additionally, YSRCP pointed out that the camera frequently focused on the visitors’ gallery, especially on TDP MPs and state ministers, suggesting a predetermined agenda rather than coincidence. The party has demanded an official inquiry into this matter.
On Thursday, the Rajya Sabha passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which grants legal recognition to Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh. The Lok Sabha had approved the bill a day earlier.
YSRCP opposed the bill in both houses, arguing that it fails to address the concerns of farmers who have given their land for the development of the state capital.
