New Delhi, February 21: The Patiala House Court in New Delhi has ordered the police custody of four Youth Congress activists for five days following their protests at the ‘India AI Impact Summit.’ The activists were presented in court by Delhi police on Saturday, just a day after their arrest.
The arrested activists include Krishna Hari, Kundan Yadav, Ajay Kumar, and Narsimha Yadav. They were taken into custody while protesting at ‘Bharat Mandapam’ in Delhi on Friday.
During the court hearing, a lawyer representing the Delhi police stated that anti-national slogans were raised during the protest. He claimed that the slogans were reminiscent of those that could divide the country, similar to those used in Nepal’s Gen-Z protests. The police argued that the protest was strategically held in a location where numerous foreign representatives were present. They also alleged that the demonstrators engaged in scuffles, resulting in injuries to some police officers. Consequently, the police requested a five-day custody for the accused.
The court inquired about the justification for the five-day remand. The police responded, stating, “We need to investigate who orchestrated the plot and who else was involved. Where were the T-shirts printed?”
The defense attorney for the accused opposed the police’s request for remand, arguing that the arrests undermine the dignity of democracy. He warned that if arrests continue for protests, even Members of Parliament could be detained for demonstrating.
The lawyer representing the Youth Congress activists emphasized that the accused are affiliated with an opposition political party and were protesting peacefully at Bharat Mandapam. He asserted that there is no evidence of any harm caused by the activists, highlighting that the right to protest is constitutional. Therefore, he argued, there is no need for police custody.
Ultimately, the Patiala House Court accepted the Delhi police’s request, ordering all four activists to be held in custody for five days.
