Purulia, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : A 19-year-old woman was tragically murdered in Purulia, West Bengal, reportedly over suspicions related to her romantic relationships. Authorities arrested 21-year-old Amit Kumar Mahato on Sunday, who is accused of killing the young woman.
According to police reports, Mahato allegedly attempted to dispose of the body by wrapping it in a bag and placing it on his motorcycle. He was apprehended early Sunday morning. The incident occurred in the Balrampur area of Purulia district.
A relative of the victim has also filed a complaint alleging sexual assault, although police have not commented on this aspect. Mahato was presented in court on Sunday, where the Balrampur police requested a 10-day custody for further investigation. However, the court granted only nine days.
A police officer stated, “A case of sudden murder has been registered. The accused will be interrogated in custody.” The victim and the suspect lived in the same police jurisdiction. Due to their studies, they resided in separate hostels in the outskirts of Purulia city, under the jurisdiction of the Tamanna police station. Recently, tensions had arisen in their relationship, with the victim reportedly in contact with another man.
On Saturday night, Mahato allegedly called the victim to his hostel. A heated argument ensued, during which he fatally attacked her with a sharp weapon, slitting her throat. To conceal the crime, he stuffed her body into a bag and tied it to his motorcycle, intending to dispose of it in the darkness.
At around 1:30 AM on Sunday, police at a checkpoint in Balrampur noticed suspicious behavior and stopped Mahato’s motorcycle. Upon searching the bag, they discovered the bloodied body. The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
During interrogation, Mahato reportedly confessed to the crime, leading to his arrest. The crime scene, located at the suspect’s hostel, has been sealed off, and the victim’s body has been sent for an autopsy.
Meanwhile, the victim’s father has alleged that others were involved in the murder alongside Mahato. He is calling for a thorough investigation and severe punishment for all those responsible. “My daughter lived in a hostel in Purulia city, where she was preparing for nursing. After having lunch on Saturday, she left for coaching. Someone may have lured her to a secluded place. I couldn’t reach her by phone for a long time, which is why we went to Purulia, where we received the tragic news from the police. We want the culprits to face the death penalty,” he stated.
