Bengaluru, May 20: A young man in Karnataka climbed a power pole on Wednesday after his girlfriend rejected his marriage proposal, causing chaos in the area. The incident occurred in Chinnaiyanpalya village, located on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
Somasekhar, the young man involved, had been in a relationship with the woman for the past three years. Recently, she declined his proposal and reportedly attempted to end the relationship.
In a fit of rage, Somasekhar allegedly damaged sheets on the roof of the woman’s house before climbing a nearby high-tension power pole.
Witnesses reported that he refused to come down, insisting he would only do so when the woman arrived at the scene.
Upon receiving the information, the police quickly arrived and attempted to persuade him to descend safely. However, despite their repeated appeals, he remained uncooperative.
Fire and rescue teams were also deployed to manage the situation. Meanwhile, a large crowd of villagers gathered at the scene as officials worked tirelessly to bring the young man down safely.
Due to the risk of high-voltage electricity flowing through the pole, power supply was cut off as a precaution, and a rescue operation was launched to ensure his safe descent.
It is worth noting that a similar tragic incident occurred on March 19, 2025, when 27-year-old Masana Shetty from Madhuvanahalli committed suicide by grabbing a high-tension power line after being disappointed over not finding a marriage partner. Shetty had been following his mother’s advice to stop drinking alcohol to secure a good spouse, but he struggled to find a suitable match despite her efforts.
The young man’s despair over his situation and financial struggles had deeply affected him, leaving his mother very worried about his well-being.
