Mumbai, March 9: New leaks indicate that Xiaomi is gearing up to launch the Xiaomi 18 Ultra sooner than anticipated this year. According to renowned tipster Smart Pikachu, the company may follow the same release pattern it used for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. Instead of an early-year launch like previous Ultra models, the upcoming device is expected to debut in China towards the end of the year, likely in December.
The camera system is rumored to undergo significant changes. Xiaomi is reportedly testing a quad-camera setup for the Xiaomi 18 Ultra. This marks a departure from the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, which opted for a mechanical zoom solution instead of a traditional four-camera layout. If the latest leaks hold true, Xiaomi may revert to a four-lens configuration to enhance focal length options and overall camera versatility.
Before adopting a triple-camera arrangement, Xiaomi utilized a quad-camera system on the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. That setup featured a 50MP primary wide-angle camera, a 50MP telephoto lens, a 200MP periscope telephoto sensor, and a 50MP ultrawide camera. If Xiaomi does not introduce a completely new camera concept this year, a similar configuration could make a comeback on the Xiaomi 18 Ultra.
To gauge the direction Xiaomi may take with the 18 Ultra, it’s useful to consider the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, which launched in China about three months ago, in December. This phone boasts a 6.9-inch 2K LTPO OLED display with a refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz. It operates on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, with options for up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage.
The device is powered by a 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, supporting 90W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. It also features an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
Photography was a key focus for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, which introduced a 50MP primary camera with a 1-inch sensor and f/1.67 aperture, alongside a 50MP ultra-wide camera with a 115-degree field of view. The telephoto system employs a 200MP sensor paired with a Leica APO zoom lens, providing continuous optical zoom from 3.2x to 4.3x.
With the Xiaomi 18 Ultra, leaks suggest that Xiaomi may expand the camera system further while also upgrading the chipset and battery capacity. More details regarding the additional lens and final hardware specifications are expected to emerge in the coming months.
