Jaipur, March 13: Rajasthan police have uncovered a women’s theft gang operating in Bhilwara. This gang allegedly traveled from Madhya Pradesh to Rajasthan, targeting jewelry during crowded religious events. According to police, to evade capture, these women swallowed the stolen jewelry, ensuring nothing was found during searches.
The Rajasthan police arrested seven women during a temple event in Kotri, Bhilwara district, for stealing jewelry. Medical examinations and X-rays revealed shocking findings; one woman had a mangalsutra and several gold beads in her stomach.
The arrested women have been identified as Shanu (31), Vratika (20), Barji Bai (52), Basanti (60), Maina (28), Payal (20), and Sapna (32), all hailing from various villages in Neemuch district. Reports indicate that older women were also actively involved in the thefts.
According to Mahaveer Meena, the station officer at Kotri police station, the theft occurred during the Sheetla Saptami festival at the Charbhuja temple. Hundreds of devotees were present to celebrate the festival, providing cover for the gang to target unsuspecting women.
Local resident Radha Ahir filed a complaint stating that her gold mangalsutra and a necklace with six gold beads were stolen amidst the crowd.
Following the complaint, police reviewed CCTV footage, which revealed that the suspects were from outside the state. During nighttime patrols, police apprehended seven suspicious women traveling in a car and took them into custody for questioning. The car’s driver was also detained.
During interrogation, the women confessed to the theft, and they were formally arrested on Thursday evening. All suspects underwent medical examinations, revealing a metallic object in Sapna’s stomach.
She was subsequently taken to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, where doctors performed surgery to remove the stolen mangalsutra and gold beads.
Police report that the gang would swallow or hide the jewelry immediately after the theft to avoid detection during searches. Investigations are ongoing to determine if this gang was involved in other thefts at crowded events in the area.
