New Delhi, May 8: The performance of Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2026 has been disappointing so far. Under the captaincy of Axar Patel, the team has managed to win only 4 out of 10 matches. Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan believes that the poor form of Kuldeep Yadav and the absence of Mitchell Starc in the early matches have significantly impacted the team’s performance.
In a virtual roundtable discussion on ‘JioHotstar’, Irfan stated, “I think there are two major reasons for Delhi Capitals’ struggles. First, I believe their decision-making could have been better. If we look at the last match, winning the toss and opting to bat first, thinking conditions would improve later, was a mistake. Especially in the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the same venue, they were bowled out for 75 runs. Weather conditions were also challenging that day, and there was rain in the match against Chennai Super Kings as well. You want to chase in such conditions, especially after winning the toss. I think they missed the mark in making the right decisions.”
Pathan further emphasized that Mitchell Starc’s absence in the initial matches was detrimental to the team. He remarked, “Then, the unavailability of Mitchell Starc at the start of the season was a problem. However, I think they could have utilized their resources better. Secondly, Kuldeep Yadav’s lack of form is a significant issue for Delhi because you rely on him, right? Especially on pitches that assist spinners. If you are conceding runs and not taking wickets on such pitches, it is a cause for concern.”
He added, “Look, he is a very good bowler, and there is no doubt about that. However, if you are giving away more than 10 runs per over, the team as the main spinner will certainly expect better performance from you. If Delhi Capitals played to their potential, they would have achieved better results.”
