A western disturbance active over North India is now impacting the plains, with noticeable changes expected in the National Capital Region (NCR) from February 1. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather in Delhi-NCR, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Greater Noida will see significant shifts due to cold winds originating from snowfall in the hilly areas.
The minimum temperature is likely to drop, accompanied by chances of thunder and rainfall. On February 1, NCR can expect rain accompanied by thunder. Early mornings may experience moderate to dense fog, while evenings and nights could bring strong surface winds, lightning, and light to very light rainfall.
Maximum temperatures are forecast to hover around 18 degrees Celsius, with minimums near 12 degrees Celsius.
Despite the impending weather change, the air quality index (AQI) remains a concern. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) show that several parts of Delhi-NCR are still in the red and orange AQI zones. Areas such as Vivek Vihar (344), Wazirpur (332), Anand Vihar (331), RK Puram (327), Rohini (312), Siri Fort (326), and Ashok Vihar (312) fall under the ‘Very Poor’ category.
Other locations, including Chandni Chowk (287), Mathura Road (291), Bawana (262), Sonia Vihar (268), and Pusa (215), remain in the orange zone. Cities in NCR also show worrying numbers: Loni and Ghaziabad report AQI levels of 328 and 318 respectively, while Sanjay Nagar stands at 238.
Noida’s sectors 125 (323), 116 (322), and 1 (305) remain in the red zone, but sector 62 shows a relatively better AQI of 185. Greater Noida’s Knowledge Park V and Knowledge Park III have AQIs of 338 and 287 respectively.
Experts expect that the upcoming rain and strong winds will improve air quality to some extent. However, residents are advised to remain cautious until conditions improve.
