Mumbai, March 7: The West Indies cricket team is finally set to leave India following their exit from the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026. They will depart on a special charter flight organized by the ICC, alongside players from England and South Africa.
According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, the two-time champions England will leave Mumbai on Saturday evening, while the West Indies, 2012 and 2016 T20 World Cup champions, will take a separate charter flight from Kolkata with South Africa.
The West Indies were supposed to return home after losing their last Super 8 match against India on March 1. However, their travel was delayed by a week due to restrictions on air travel in the Middle East following attacks by the USA and Israel on Iran.
South Africa had lost to New Zealand in the first semifinal on March 4, which also took place in Kolkata. The South African team is currently stranded in Kolkata. Meanwhile, the England team is stuck in Mumbai after their defeat to India in the second semifinal on March 5.
The report states, “England will take a direct flight to London. The West Indies team, along with South Africa, will first head to Johannesburg and then to Antigua. Both teams are still awaiting confirmation of their actual departure times, but it is believed they may leave on Sunday.”
On Saturday, West Indies head coach Darren Sammy posted on his X account about being stuck in Kolkata for several days since their last match. Spinner Akil Hosein even humorously requested help from football star Cristiano Ronaldo to get the team home.
The Zimbabwe cricket team was also stranded in New Delhi for similar reasons, but the ICC arranged an alternative route for them to return to Harare via Addis Ababa. Zimbabwe departed for Harare on Thursday.
