West Bengal Governor Appoints Acting Registrar and Finance Officer at Jadavpur University

Kolkata, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : The Governor of West Bengal, R.N. Ravi, has appointed new officials at Jadavpur University in Kolkata. Debajit Dutta will serve as the acting registrar, while Indrajit Banerjee takes on the role of finance officer.

This announcement was made by state government officials on Wednesday. A letter from the West Bengal Higher Education Department to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Chiranjeeb Bhattacharya, confirmed the appointments. The letter stated that Dutta, an associate professor in the History Department, and Banerjee, the secretary of the Faculty of Arts, will hold these positions temporarily for six months. Their appointments will commence from their joining date or until further notice, whichever comes first.

The letter also indicated that the process to appoint permanent officials for these roles could begin immediately. Discussions regarding the permanent registrar and finance officer took place during a working committee meeting on September 4.

To facilitate these appointments, two representatives from the working committee have been nominated to the appointment committee. However, no permanent appointments have been made yet.

In April 2025, the terms of the previous acting registrar, Selim Box Mandal, and temporary finance officer, Shiladitya Chatterjee, were extended for a second time. This extension faced opposition from a group of teachers who claimed it was illegal to prolong their tenure beyond six months. Gautam Maiti, the general secretary of the All Bengal University Teachers Association (ABUTA), stated that complaints had been lodged with the Governor, who also serves as the university’s chancellor, regarding the legality of these appointments.

Concerns were also raised about the legitimacy of the working committee meeting where the extension was decided. Previously, former interim Vice-Chancellor Budhadev Saha had expressed objections to the extensions of these two officials.

This development follows recent clashes between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) within and outside the Jadavpur University campus. The Chief Minister mentioned that anti-national slogans were allegedly chanted in the hostel area, prompting the formation of an investigation committee. Subsequently, offensive writings on the walls were removed.
