Kolkata, May 20: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Wednesday that an investigation into alleged corruption within the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) will commence. The GTA is an autonomous body that manages civil affairs in the hilly regions of Darjeeling, Kurseong, and Kalimpong in North Bengal.
The announcement was made during an administrative meeting in Siliguri, Darjeeling district, which was chaired by the Chief Minister himself.
Currently, the GTA is operated by the ‘Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha’ (BGPM), founded by Anit Thapa, who serves as its chief executive. The BGPM is an ally of the Trinamool Congress.
According to the Chief Minister, there have been numerous allegations of large-scale corruption in the GTA during the previous Trinamool Congress government. The former government, led by Mamata Banerjee, did not take action on these allegations, as the BGPM was an ally of the then-ruling party in West Bengal.
The Chief Minister stated that the investigation into these corruption allegations within the GTA will now begin. Recently, Minister Nishith Pramanik also raised concerns about corruption in the GTA. All these cases will be investigated. As I have mentioned before, the new state government will operate with a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy towards corruption, which will also apply to the GTA.
He further noted that the new state government aims to fulfill the promises made regarding the development of North Bengal in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) pre-election manifesto within the next year.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that he plans to visit North Bengal again in July. He advised BJP workers in North Bengal to prepare a record of their proposals to be presented to the state government. During his upcoming visit in July, he will personally collect these proposals. He assured that the state government would consider these proposals seriously and strive to implement them as much as possible.
