West Bengal to Conduct Extensive Survey to Identify Encroachments on Government Land

Kolkata, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : The West Bengal government is set to undertake a comprehensive survey of government-owned land across the state. This initiative aims to identify encroachments and reclaim illegally occupied land.

The survey will be conducted by the Directorate of Land Records and Surveys, which operates under the state’s Department of Land and Land Revenue. A senior official from the department stated that the survey will accurately define the boundaries of all government-owned land. This will help determine how much of this land has been encroached upon and how much is still under government control.

To maintain control over land reclaimed from encroachment, the government plans to install permanent markers along the boundaries of these properties. Officials noted that while a significant amount of land is recorded as government-owned, the actual situation regarding its occupation remains unclear.

Reports indicate that many plots of land under various state departments have been vacant for years and have gradually been encroached upon by individuals or institutions over time.

In an effort to attract large investments, the state government is moving forward with a new land policy that emphasizes the need for large contiguous plots. This survey is crucial for identifying and reclaiming encroached government land.

The Directorate of Land Records and Surveys has also issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to engage a specialized agency for the survey work. An official from the state government mentioned that once the survey is completed, it will be easier for the administration to determine the precise locations, areas, and boundaries of government land.

To ensure accuracy, the survey will utilize modern Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology, with a goal to complete the entire process within the next six months.
