Warwickshire Signs Pakistans Mystery Spinner Usman Tariq for T20 Blast

New Delhi, May 6: The 28-year-old spinner Usman Tariq has signed with Warwickshire County Cricket Club for the upcoming Vitality T20 Blast. Tariq will be available for the entire season and will subsequently join the Hundred tournament, where he will play for the Birmingham Phoenix. Both tournaments will take place at Edgbaston.

This move marks Tariq’s first experience in county cricket and highlights the growing demand for his unique bowling skills. Within just two years of his senior T20 debut, Tariq has secured a regular spot in Pakistan’s T20 international team. In only nine international matches, he has taken 18 wickets, boasting an impressive average of 11.16 and an economy rate of 6.66.

His diverse bowling repertoire, including off-breaks, googlies, and flicked leg-breaks, along with his pause before releasing the ball, has posed significant challenges for batsmen. Tariq’s outstanding performances in the Pakistan Super League have opened new doors for him globally, allowing him to participate in leagues such as the CPL, ILT20, and Abu Dhabi T10.

For Tariq, this move is not only about embracing a new challenge but also about connecting with fans. He expressed, “I am eagerly looking forward to joining the Warwickshire team. Being part of this team feels fantastic. I hope to see as many fans as possible at Edgbaston this summer.”

Warwickshire’s Performance Director, James Thomas, commented on Tariq’s skills and the rationale behind signing him. “Usman is exactly the kind of high-impact player we wanted to bring to Warwickshire. We are thrilled to finalize this deal. His skills and deep understanding of the game make him a significant threat in today’s white-ball cricket. Most importantly, his determination to win and strive for continuous improvement stands out.”

Thomas also highlighted the strategic synergy between the county and its Hundred franchise. He stated, “The most exciting aspect of this deal is the collaboration between Warwickshire and Birmingham Phoenix. Bringing Usman into the Warwickshire team for the Vitality Blast, followed by playing with the Phoenix in the Hundred, illustrates the strong and integrated model between our club and franchise. This allows us to maintain continuity for the player, maximize performance impact in both competitions, and strengthen our connection with supporters in Birmingham and Warwickshire.”
