New Delhi, May 11: Government oil companies have issued a warning regarding the rising LPG delivery scams in the country. Fraudsters are posing as gas delivery vendors, using OTPs and delivery authentication codes to deceive consumers.
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Indian Oil Corporation, and Bharat Petroleum have alerted consumers on social media about this cyber fraud. Domestic LPG users are being targeted through fake SMS and WhatsApp messages that mimic delivery notifications. These messages request customers to share a one-time password (OTP) or delivery authentication code (DAC).
In several instances, callers have impersonated gas agency officials, requesting KYC updates or linking Aadhaar to avoid disconnection of gas connections. They then ask for OTPs to “verify” these requests.
HPCL has informed customers that official delivery messages will come from ‘VM-HPGAS-C-S’, containing a four-digit OTP that should only be used at the time of cylinder delivery.
The post stated, “HP Gas representatives will never ask for OTPs via phone calls, WhatsApp messages, or suspicious links.” It also advised, “Do not trust messages that appear urgent, unfamiliar, or differ from official formats.”
Similarly, Indian Oil urged customers to share their six-digit DAC only when Indane delivery personnel arrive at their doorstep.
BPCL reminded consumers that “sharing OTPs only at the time of delivery” is their sole safety rule.
Additionally, oil companies have encouraged consumers to book cylinders or update details only through their official applications like IndianOil One, HP Pay, or Hello BPCL. Verified websites can also be used, but consumers should be cautious of messages from personal mobile numbers via WhatsApp.
If customers accidentally share their details or fall victim to financial fraud, they should call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 within the “golden hour” window to increase the chances of freezing stolen funds.
