New Delhi, April 26: Voting for the extensive local body elections in Gujarat commenced on Sunday. This election encompasses 393 self-governing bodies across the state. It includes 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats, marking a significant democratic process.
Polling began at 7:00 AM and will conclude at 6:00 PM. If necessary, re-polling will occur the following day. The counting of votes is scheduled for April 28. Voters have been lining up at polling stations since morning, with many opting to vote early due to the heat.
These elections are particularly crucial as they serve as a key indicator of public sentiment ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections at the end of next year and the Lok Sabha elections in the following two years. There are over 41.8 million voters, and approximately 50,000 polling stations have been established.
A total of 9,992 local representatives are being elected. After withdrawals, over 20,000 candidates remain in the fray, with several candidates already elected unopposed.
