Kolkata, April 17: A vibrant celebration of democracy unfolded in Darjeeling, West Bengal, on Friday morning. Under the Election Commission’s SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) initiative, a voter awareness walkathon was organized, attracting enthusiastic participation from both youth and senior citizens.
According to the Election Commission’s SVEEP ‘X’ handle, “A large crowd gathered at Chowk Bazar (Chaurasta) on a foggy morning. The event commenced with a voter oath, followed by an energetic walkathon. Notably, senior citizens led the walkathon, while the youth participated with great enthusiasm.”
To enhance awareness, popular cartoon characters ‘Chhota Bheem’ and ‘Chutki’ joined the event, adding vibrancy to the atmosphere. Throughout the event, the message of peaceful and festive elections resonated through the hills of Darjeeling. Participants were urged to recognize that voting is not just a right but also a responsibility.
Darjeeling, known as the ‘Queen of the Hills’, is situated at an elevation of approximately 2,045 meters in the Eastern Himalayas. The city is renowned for its stunning beauty, famous Darjeeling tea, breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga mountain, and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Tiger Hill is famous for its spectacular sunrise views, showcasing glimpses of Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga, alongside tea estates like Happy Valley Tea Estate that define the region.
In West Bengal, the assembly elections will take place in two phases this time. Voting for the first phase is scheduled for April 23, while the second phase will occur on April 29. The counting of votes will be conducted on May 4.
Through such awareness programs, the Election Commission aims to encourage more citizens to participate in voting and strengthen democracy.
