Thiruvananthapuram, September 27 (Daily Kiran) : Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has reached a significant milestone by scoring 15,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). After achieving this feat, he emphasized that personal achievements have never been his primary focus. Instead, his commitment has always been to play according to the team’s needs. Kohli expressed his excitement about embracing a “new version” of himself at this stage of his career.
During the first ODI against the West Indies at Greenfield International Stadium, the 37-year-old Kohli delivered an impressive performance, scoring an unbeaten 139 runs off 88 balls. This innings marked his 55th century in ODIs and helped India secure an eight-wicket victory, giving them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. With this achievement, Kohli became the second player in history to reach 15,000 ODI runs, following the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, and set the record for the fastest player to achieve this milestone.
In a post-match interview, Kohli stated, “I have never focused on these milestones. My priority has always been to contribute according to the team’s requirements. Achievements come on their own. I feel very fortunate and grateful to have had the opportunity to play for India for so long.”
He mentioned that his approach has always been to work hard with humility and to be thankful for every opportunity. Kohli recognizes that millions aspire to play for India, and he considers himself fortunate to be among those who have had that chance.
Discussing his recent consistency, Kohli highlighted the importance of mental strength in the game. “I have never believed in excessive practice, even when playing all formats. For me, staying mentally refreshed, living in the moment, and expressing myself freely on the field are essential,” he said.
Kohli has challenged himself to increase his batting pace in ODIs. “At this stage of my career, I have decided to elevate my game. This challenge excites me. When you prepare a new version of yourself, it benefits the team, whether I play for India or in the IPL,” he explained.
He credited his fitness as the key to his success, stating that a fit body grants mental freedom. “I prioritize keeping my body fit, which allows my mind to perceive the game as I wish to play it. This gives me the best chance to implement strategies on the field,” he added.
Reflecting on his cricketing journey, Kohli expressed gratitude. “Sometimes, we need to look back at where we started. Fame and people’s love can make us forget this. Remembering my journey from childhood to now fills me with gratitude,” he said.
Playing for India has been his childhood dream, and he cherishes every moment. “There was a possibility that I might never play for India. But I have had the opportunity to represent my country and play in prestigious stadiums. My heart is filled with gratitude, and I hope to bring smiles to people’s faces through my hard work,” Kohli remarked.
He advised young players to focus solely on the game rather than distractions outside the field. “Play every match like it’s your last. This mindset keeps you positive and fuels your passion to win for the team. Once you step onto the field, that should be your entire world,” he urged.
Kohli emphasized the importance of fitness and hard work without compromise. He advised players to run even if it means completing four doubles in an over while maintaining a strike rate of 150, saying there should be no excuses.
Looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup, Kohli noted that his goals are now clear with only one format to focus on. “With about a year left until the World Cup, I know what my objectives are. I must work on different aspects of my game, stay fit, and maintain the ability to run between the wickets in the final 15 overs with full intensity,” he explained.
He expressed a desire to enjoy every opportunity rather than feel pressure or anxiety. “I have promised myself to play positive cricket without being careless. As an experienced player, I need to understand that fine line to lead the team to victory,” he concluded.
Kohli also praised captain Shubman Gill, who scored 110 runs in the match, stating, “Shubman is among the best ODI batsmen in the world. He understands what the team needs in different situations. Partnering with such a player makes it easier, and I will always be there for him whenever he needs me.”
