Thiruvananthapuram, September 27 (Daily Kiran) : India triumphed over West Indies by eight wickets in the first One Day International (ODI) match held on September 27 at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. The victory was powered by stellar performances from Virat Kohli and captain Shubman Gill, both of whom scored centuries.
Batting first after losing the toss, the West Indies managed to post a total of 295 runs, losing seven wickets. John Campbell and Justin Greaves formed a formidable partnership, scoring 135 runs for the first wicket over 19.2 overs. Campbell scored 62 runs off 60 balls, hitting three sixes and six fours. Greaves contributed significantly with his 101 runs off 108 balls, including 12 boundaries, before falling to the Indian bowling attack.
After a solid start, the West Indies faltered, losing five wickets for just 63 runs as they slipped from 176 to 198. Amidst the collapse, Amir Jangoo played a crucial knock, remaining unbeaten on 58 runs from 43 balls, while Roston Chase added 24 runs to help set a challenging target. For India, Kuldeep Yadav was the standout bowler, claiming four wickets, while Prasidh Krishna and Nitish Reddy took two and one wickets, respectively.
In response, India chased down the target in just 41.4 overs. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma opened the innings with a solid 74-run partnership in 12 overs. Rohit scored 32 runs off 35 balls before Kohli took charge. Kohli and Gill then put together a 151-run partnership for the second wicket, propelling India to 225 runs. Gill scored 110 runs off 108 balls, featuring one six and 13 fours.
Kohli continued to dominate, finishing the match unbeaten on 139 runs from 88 balls, which included nine sixes and ten fours. He completed his century with a six and shared a quick partnership of 75 runs off just 46 balls with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored 13 runs not out. The West Indies bowlers, Alzarri Joseph and Roston Chase, each took one wicket.
India now leads the three-match series 1-0.
