Chennai, May 9: Vijay, the president of the Tamilaga Vetria Kazhagam (TVK), will take the oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning. This announcement was made in an official statement from Lok Bhavan. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on May 10 at 10 AM.
According to the Raj Bhavan, C. Joseph Vijay met with the Governor of Tamil Nadu on Friday and submitted a letter confirming his election as the leader of the TVK legislative party. He also presented letters of support from the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) to the Governor.
Following this, the Governor appointed Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and invited him to form the government. The Governor also instructed the newly appointed Chief Minister to secure a vote of confidence in the Assembly by May 13.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Manickam Tagore congratulated Vijay, stating, “We extend our heartfelt wishes to Vijay as he assumes the role of Chief Minister. Tamil Nadu stands at a juncture of change and new hopes.”
Tagore emphasized that the people of the state expect an inclusive Tamil Nadu based on social justice, equality, development, and humane governance. He expressed confidence that under Vijay’s leadership, a people-centric, transparent, and well-governed administration will be established.
He added, “We wish you success in your new journey for the people of Tamil Nadu.”
It is noteworthy that voting for all 234 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu took place in a single phase on April 23. The elections saw a fierce contest among DMK, AIADMK, NTK, and TVK.
The vote counting occurred on May 4, where TVK emerged as the largest party with 108 seats, but fell short of a majority. Following this, intense political activities began for government formation, and TVK started negotiations to gather support from various parties and independent legislators.
Initially, the Congress extended support to Vijay, followed by announcements from CPI and CPM to back TVK. With the support of VCK and IUML, TVK has now crossed the majority mark.
