New Delhi, 29 December. Slow left-arm orthodox bowler Vaishnavi Sharma made a mark in the Under-19 World Cup 2025 and has earned a place in the senior Indian team. She was the highest wicket-taker in the tournament, claiming 17 wickets at an average of 4.35 in six matches. Vaishnavi is the first female cricketer from the Chambal region to represent the country.
Born on 18 December 2005 in Gwalior, Vaishnavi is the daughter of a university astrology professor. After studying her horoscope, her father predicted she could excel in sports or medicine. He believed if she became a doctor, the city would know her, but if she succeeded in sports, the whole world would recognise her.
Vaishnavi showed interest in cricket from an early age. Her father supported her talent wholeheartedly. She began formal training at the age of five and practised for hours at the Tansen Cricket Academy in Gwalior. Her family, including her parents and brother, worked hard to help her succeed despite facing financial challenges. She was honoured with the Jagmohan Dalmia Trophy as the best female cricketer in the 2022-23 junior domestic season.
Her impressive domestic cricket performances caught the selectors’ attention. Vaishnavi took 21 wickets in the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy and 12 wickets in five matches of the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal T20, becoming the highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
Despite her excellent show in the Under-19 World Cup, Vaishnavi did not get a contract in the Women’s Premier League. However, she did catch the eye of captain Harmanpreet Kaur.
At the age of 20, Vaishnavi made her senior India debut on 21 December 2025, bowling four overs for just 16 runs, though she did not take any wickets. In the next match, given another chance by the captain, she delivered by taking two wickets for 32 runs. So far, she has taken four wickets in the four-match T20 series against Sri Lanka. This series is the beginning of India’s preparations for the T20 World Cup.
