
Azamgarh, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : In Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, police apprehended a member of a goat theft gang during an encounter on October 4. The main suspect managed to escape. One of the accused sustained a gunshot wound to the right leg and was later hospitalized. Authorities recovered a .315 bore firearm, cartridges, a motorcycle, and cash from the arrested individual.
The confrontation occurred in the Siddharth area of Azamgarh district. The suspect has been identified as Asif, a resident of Ashrafpur in the Jiyanpur area.
According to police reports, they received a tip-off about two gang members traveling by motorcycle in the Shahgarh region. Officers set up a blockade near the Lohari bridge on the Samenda-Pura Thakurai road. When the police attempted to stop the motorcycle, Asif, who was riding pillion, opened fire on the officers. In the ensuing exchange, he was shot in the leg and subsequently arrested, then taken to the district hospital.
During interrogation, Asif admitted to his involvement in several goat thefts, including two goats stolen from Daulatpur in the Siddharth area, one from Samenda, and three from the Bariyadiha area of Jiyanpur. Police also recovered ₹1,560 from him, which was his share from selling one of the stolen goats.
Police confirmed that the alleged main suspect, Kaleem, son of Islam from Shahpur in the Jiyanpur area, escaped by taking advantage of the darkness. A police team is actively searching for his capture.
Records indicate that Asif has six pending cases against him, while Kaleem has 38 registered against him. Authorities have initiated legal proceedings against Asif under the Arms Act and other relevant charges.
