
Lucknow, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : The state of Uttar Pradesh is revolutionizing its land surveying and demarcation processes through the implementation of advanced GNSS rover technology. The Yogi government is deploying this high-tech solution to modernize the operations of the revenue department. Out of 504 GNSS rovers available in the state, 350 have already been delivered to various tehsils, and fieldwork has commenced. Additionally, 143 rovers are currently being utilized in ten urban local body mapping projects.
At the KTS (Consolidation Training Center) in Hardoi, two rovers have been installed, while nine rovers purchased for training revenue officials have successfully completed their training programs. This technological shift aims to transition land surveying from traditional methods to a more rapid, accurate, and digital system. Kanchan Verma, the Commissioner and Secretary of the Revenue Council, noted that the deployment of GNSS rovers extends beyond tehsils. With 350 rovers now in the field, they are actively being used for surveys, while the remaining 143 are dedicated to urban mapping projects.
The introduction of these rovers is part of a broader initiative to enhance efficiency in resolving land boundary and measurement issues. A special campaign under Section 24 was launched from July 1 to August 15 to expedite these matters. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the campaign in Saharanpur on July 1. To ensure effective and uniform implementation, the revenue department has also issued standard operating procedures (SOPs).
GNSS rovers are sophisticated surveying instruments that determine the precise location of points on the ground based on signals from various satellite systems. When connected to Uttar Pradesh’s network, they can provide accuracy within 1 to 5 centimeters. Surveyors record the digital coordinates of key boundary points, and software is then used to calculate distances and areas, producing digital maps. Compared to traditional methods that rely on chains and tapes, rover technology offers a more scientific and digital approach to surveying.
The digital coordinates collected in the field can be integrated with GIS and land record systems, making it easier to secure data, verify quality, and utilize it as needed. By recording key boundary points digitally, human error is minimized, and the likelihood of mistakes is reduced. Large-scale surveys can now be completed more quickly and with less manpower.
This advancement not only saves time and costs in extensive land surveys and mapping projects but also minimizes the risk of crop damage during agricultural land measurements. By utilizing GNSS rovers, the need for repeated field visits and lengthy procedures is significantly reduced. The surveying process now focuses on capturing essential digital coordinates without harming crops.
Farmers are finding the process increasingly convenient, as the digital data generated by rovers helps streamline land records and mapping systems. It also facilitates quality checks on records and maintains data traceability. The application of this technology in land parcel surveys, cadastral mapping, mapping projects, and GIS-based mapping is aiding in the modernization of revenue administration.
