Lucknow, May 20: The Uttar Pradesh government has established a dedicated Backward Classes Commission for local rural bodies. This commission will study and provide recommendations related to the reservation for backward classes. The notification regarding this was issued by the Panchayati Raj Section-3 on Wednesday.
According to the notification, appointments for the chairman and members of the commission were made following the governor’s approval. Retired Justice Ram Avatar Singh of the Allahabad High Court has been appointed as the chairman. The commission also includes retired Additional District Judges Brijesh Kumar and Santosh Kumar Vishwakarma, retired IAS officer Dr. Arvind Kumar Chaurasia, and retired IFS officer S.P. Singh as members.
The order was issued by Principal Secretary Anil Kumar. It states that the appointments of the chairman and members will be effective for six months from the date of their assuming office. Separate orders regarding the remuneration, allowances, and other facilities for the chairman and members will be issued later.
This notification was released in accordance with the provisions of the earlier notification number 1274/33-3-2026 dated May 18, 2026, from the Panchayati Raj Section-3.
In light of the upcoming three-tier panchayat elections in the state, the government has expedited preparations. To advance the process of determining reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in the panchayat elections, the state government has issued the notification for the establishment of the dedicated Backward Classes Commission.
It is believed that the final framework for reservation in the panchayat elections will be determined based on the commission’s recommendations. According to the government notification, the commission will submit its report to the government within the stipulated timeframe. If necessary, the government may extend the commission’s term or the deadline for submitting the report. The commission will examine data related to the social and political participation of backward classes in panchayats and constitutional provisions.
