Istanbul, February 13: Efforts to halt the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine have been intensifying. Following two rounds of talks mediated by the United States, a third round is set to take place in Geneva. Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Kremlin, confirmed details regarding the upcoming meeting.
According to Turkey’s Anadolu Agency, this meeting is scheduled for February 17-18 in Geneva, Switzerland. During a press briefing, Peskov stated, “It has been agreed that this will definitely happen next week. We will inform you of the location and exact dates, but it will be next week.”
In January and earlier this month, peace talks were held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, with U.S. mediation. During the second round, both sides reached an agreement on the exchange of prisoners for the first time.
In early February, discussions facilitated by the U.S. saw both nations agree on a large-scale prisoner exchange, although no significant progress was made on key issues such as regional arrangements and a ceasefire.
According to Ukraine, the talks initially involved the three countries before moving to group-level discussions. Rustam Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, stated that the Ukrainian delegation demanded a respectful and lasting peace but did not disclose any specific outcomes.
Following the talks, neither Russia nor Ukraine issued a joint political or security statement, indicating that disagreements over territorial disputes, ceasefire, and security guarantees remain unresolved.
Steve Vitkoff, the U.S. special envoy, reported that representatives from the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine agreed on the prisoner exchange. He described the discussions as constructive and positive but emphasized that further efforts are needed to resolve the entire conflict.
After nearly five months, Russia and Ukraine conducted a large-scale prisoner exchange, releasing 157 individuals from each side. Ukrainian President Zelensky noted that those released included both military personnel and civilians.
