New Delhi, May 4: As World Yoga Day approaches, the Ministry of AYUSH in India is sharing insights on various yoga poses and their benefits. Recently, they highlighted the Paschimottanasana, a forward bending pose that offers significant advantages.
Experts believe that Paschimottanasana activates the core and provides relaxation to the nervous system. This simple yet effective pose involves sitting upright and bending forward towards the legs.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, regular practice of this asana helps maintain internal balance, calms the mind, and makes one feel lighter. The benefits of practicing Paschimottanasana are numerous.
Core Activation: Strengthens the muscles around the abdomen and lower back.
Nervous System Relaxation: Focusing on breath reduces stress and relaxes the entire nervous system.
Improved Digestion: Alleviates bloating, constipation, lack of appetite, and other digestive issues.
Relief from Sciatica and Back Pain: Stretching the lower back and legs can reduce sciatica pain.
Mental Peace: Regular practice decreases anxiety and stress while enhancing concentration.
To practice Paschimottanasana, start by sitting straight on a mat with both legs extended forward. Keep your heels and toes together. With a straight back, raise your arms overhead and inhale deeply. As you exhale, bend forward from the waist, trying to grasp your toes, soles, or heels. Aim to touch your forehead to your knees. Hold this position for 20 to 40 seconds while breathing deeply and slowly. Then, inhale as you return to a seated position.
It’s important to take precautions while practicing Paschimottanasana. If you have serious back, waist, or knee issues, consult a yoga instructor before attempting this pose. Pregnant women should avoid this asana without expert guidance.
