Amritsar, August 13: UK Member of Parliament Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi visited the iconic Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar on Thursday. During his visit, he expressed the importance of strengthening ties between the UK and India, particularly Punjab. Dhesi advocated for increasing direct flights from Punjab to the UK to boost trade, tourism, and address issues concerning the Indian diaspora.
After paying his respects at the temple, Dhesi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to visit with his family. He prayed for the prosperity of both the UK and India, especially Punjab. Dhesi has served as an MP in the UK for nearly a decade and has been a member of the Parliament’s Defense Committee for the past two years. He prayed for wisdom and strength to fulfill his responsibilities effectively.
Dhesi also discussed the reopening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor with the President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). He emphasized that reopening the corridor would allow more devotees to visit Kartarpur Sahib, and he assured that necessary government procedures would be expedited.
The UK MP highlighted the need for direct flights from Punjab to the UK and other countries. He noted that more direct flights from Amritsar and Chandigarh would significantly benefit Punjab. These services would facilitate easier travel between Punjab and the UK, promoting trade and tourism while providing convenience for the Indian diaspora living in the UK.
During his visit to Punjab, Dhesi met with various leaders and officials in Chandigarh, including discussions with the Chief Minister on multiple issues. He thanked the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly for the warm welcome during the assembly session.
Dhesi raised several issues concerning the NRI community with relevant ministers, including the need for prompt resolutions to property disputes and other concerns. He addressed the rising cases of extortion, stating that many people are suffering due to this issue and that strict action is necessary. He stressed the importance of better coordination between the governments of India, the UK, Canada, the US, and Australia to effectively tackle such matters.
Emphasizing the need for timely resolutions to property disputes involving NRIs, he urged the Chief Minister to ensure a structured approach for resolving these issues within a specified timeframe.
Dhesi concluded by stating that the relationship between Punjab and the UK extends beyond the Indian diaspora. He believes that stronger ties can be forged in trade, tourism, education, and interpersonal connections, which are crucial for Punjab’s development.
