Jaipur, August 21: The second day of the monsoon session in the Rajasthan Assembly witnessed significant turmoil as the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill was introduced amidst uproar and chanting. Minister Jogaram Patel presented the bill, which will be discussed and voted on later. The day began with repeated disruptions in the house.
Opposition leader Tikaram Julie raised concerns about Congress legislators being blocked at the assembly gate and demanded a discussion on the issue. He also wanted to address the attack on CJP activists who were inspecting schools.
The Speaker did not allow the issue to be raised during question hour. Following this, Congress legislators entered the well of the house, protesting against the government and displaying posters calling it a ‘fugitive’.
In response, BJP legislators shouted slogans labeling Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as a ‘fugitive’ and a ‘thief’. As the uproar intensified, the assembly proceedings were suspended first until noon and then until 1 PM.
When the house reconvened at 1 PM, protests continued. Amidst the noise, Minister Jogaram Patel introduced the UCC bill. A debate and voting will follow. Congress legislators boycotted the session and walked out at 1:21 PM.
Tikaram Julie stated that the opposition is being prevented from raising issues that concern the public. He accused the government of ignoring public concerns to push through its legislative agenda.
The Speaker had previously instructed Congress members to allow the passing of grant demands related to the finance department. A heated debate also erupted between Congress and BJP legislators regarding the attack on CJP activists during the protests.
Minister Jogaram Patel labeled Congress as the ‘murderer of democracy’ and claimed they lacked substantial issues to raise.
Government Chief Whip Jogeshwar Garg accused Congress legislators of bringing outsiders and ‘anti-social elements’ into the assembly premises, which led to their being stopped at the gate.
After the Congress boycott, Jogaram Patel alleged that the uproar was due to internal differences within Congress. He claimed that the chaos was deliberately orchestrated to prevent the opposition leader from gaining political credit. Patel also accused Congress of staging improper protests and making misleading statements to the media.
He stated that the opposition fled the assembly without raising any substantial issues, even during question hour, and that the people of Rajasthan are watching all of this unfold. The assembly proceedings continued in the absence of Congress legislators.
