Tehran, May 18: Negotiations between Iran and the United States are underway to resolve ongoing tensions. During these talks, the U.S. has reportedly agreed to temporarily ease oil sanctions against Iran. This concession implies that some restrictions will be lifted for a limited time, while Iran insists on the complete removal of all sanctions under U.S. commitments. This information was shared by Iranian media on Monday, citing sources.
According to the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, the U.S. proposed to lift certain restrictions from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) until a final agreement is reached.
Iran has also submitted a new 14-point proposal to the U.S. Previously, Iran had responded to an American proposal, which was outright rejected by the U.S. President.
Tasnim reported that after amendments, Iran once again submitted its 14-point proposal through mediation from Pakistan. The revised text emphasizes initiating talks to end hostilities and steps to build trust from the U.S. side.
The U.S. has consistently demanded that Iran halt uranium enrichment activities for 20 years. In response to this request from former President Donald Trump, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei stated on Monday that Tehran’s right to uranium enrichment under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is non-negotiable and does not require validation from any other party.
He confirmed that discussions with the U.S. are ongoing and that Iran will firmly adhere to its principles at every stage of the process.
Baghaei made it clear that Iran is fully prepared for any situation and will defend itself vigorously against any reckless actions. He mentioned that there would be surprises for the Iranian Armed Forces.
He also noted that Washington uses economic pressure as a tool but has realized that threats and pressure cannot deter Iran from fighting for its people’s rights.
