Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has advised Donald Trump, saying that the United States should consider India a “valuable and democratic partner.” Haley warned that damaging relations with India would be a strategic disaster. If America wants to curb China’s growing ambitions, it must prioritise its relationship with India.
In an article published in Newsweek, Haley wrote that the US must not overlook the fact that its primary challenge is China, and to face this, America needs a friend like India. India, being a democratic country, poses no threat to the world with its rise, but China’s growing power under a communist regime is a global challenge. Haley said that India is the only country in Asia capable of countering China’s dominance.
Haley further wrote that India, like China, has large-scale manufacturing capabilities, which can help the US meet its supply chain demands through India rather than China. She emphasised that treating India as an enemy would be a strategic blunder. India’s growing defence capacity and its role in the Middle East could prove crucial for stability in the region.
Highlighting India’s global importance, Haley’s article comes at a time when US-India trade disputes are at their peak and President Donald Trump has imposed a 25 percent reciprocal duty and an additional 25 percent tariff on India, which will be effective from 27 August.
Haley also mentioned that India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy. India’s rise will curb China’s ambition for global dominance. As India grows stronger, China’s ambitions will weaken. Haley concluded that a US-India partnership will benefit both countries and empower India to stand more firmly against China. However, she cautioned that if the trade dispute between the US and India drags on, China could take advantage of the situation.
